Smith Park
Smith Park, located in West Town Chicago, is bordered by N Washtenaw Ave. on the east, N Western on the west, W Chicago Ave. to the north, and W Grand on the south.
Architecture
The Smith Park neighborhood was settled early on by Sicilian immigrants who had moved from “Little Sicily”. You’ll find some traces, here and there, of the old Italian Victorian styles that have been revamped. Most of Smith Park consists of bungalow style homes, two and four story flats, and newer, modern condos.
The Smith Park area is one of those “settling down” parts of Chicago. Some of the residents have been living in the neighborhood for more than 5 generations. Most of the residential areas are somewhat quiet and great for families.
Rentals
Rental properties go anywhere from $600 - $900 for one bedroom (although one bedrooms are somewhat hard to find). Two bedroom apartments go anywhere from $750 - $1,600. Three bedroom apartments start at $800 but can go as high as $2,400.
Sales
Condos in Smith Park can be found for less than $250,000, but not often. Most condos go from $250,000 to $400,000.
The market for single family homes has been thriving in Smith Park. Prices range dramatically, though, according to size, condition, amenities, etc.,. They start at $350,000 and can go as high as $1,000,000. Multi-unit prices vary as well. They start at $350,000 for a 2-flat and $700,000 for a 3-flat. Some of the more extravagant Victorian styles can go for much more.
Schools
Smith Park, while it has very few schools located in the actual neighborhood, has several schools surrounding the area.
Elementary schools include St. Helen School, Lafayette Elementary School, Erie Elementary Charter School, and Chopin Elementary School. High Schools include Lyc Chicago High School and Clemente Community Academy High School.
Dining
Much of Smith Park is residential, but people still find plenty of places to eat in and around the area. Shokolad Pastry & Cafe, located on Chicago Ave., is a favorite to some, serving some of Chicago’s finest pastries and Ukrainian dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pizza lovers can stop in at Village Pizza, also located on Chicago Ave., to get a slice and a pop just for a few dollars. And for anyone with a southern style taste bud, they can eat at Feed where the atmosphere is as friendly and ‘down home’ as the food.
Night Life
Smith Park isn’t quite as active as some of the other parts of Chicago, but the area does offer several choices for those who want to live it up after hours. Cat’s Meow, on Chicago Ave., offers food and drink, indoor and outdoor seating, and both live music and DJs. The Black Beetle Bar and Grille (also on Chicago Ave.) has a nice hip-hop atmosphere. They feature DJs, serve good food, and have a 35 person bar, tables, and standing room.
