East Village

East Village, located in northwestern Chicago, is bordered by N. Damen on the west, N. Ashland on the east, W. Grand on the south, and W. Division on the north. While some consider the area south of W. Grand to be a part of River West, the people in that area consider themselves native East Villagers, so we’ve included that area as part of East Village.

Architecture
The architecture in East Village varies greatly in style and convenience as much of the area has undergone reconstruction. The older homes tend to be from the historical working class, since the area was so densely populated and close to the elevated train. More recent construction turned a lot of the older homes into modern condos. Bargains are somewhat rare, but still available since the neighborhood continues to expand.
Rentals
Few empty apartments in East Village last for long. It’s an area close to the loop, so the driving opportunity makes it a highly desirable area. One bedroom apartments can be found for anywhere between $700 and $1,200. Two bedrooms are more common and run from $800 - $1,800. And three bedrooms range from $900 - $2,400.

The East Village area, like Bucktown and Wicker Park, has a wide range of prices due to size and apartment conditions. The two bedroom apartments are usually somewhat smaller than the three bedrooms. The vintage three bedroom apartments are usually larger (though not as large as those in Logan Square and Humboldt Park) and can be found for $800 - $950.
Sales
The homes for sale in East Village (as everywhere else) have climbed recently. While condos can occasionally be found for less than $200,000, it is rare. Most two bedroom condos sell for around $250,000. The recently rebuilt duplexes run for $500,000 or more. The recently rehabbed single family homes sell for $400,000 and up, and the new construction homes go for as much as $1,000,000. Multifamily units generally go for $400,000 for a 2 flat and $700,000 for a 3 flat.
Schools
The only Public School actually located inside the East Village area is Hans Christian Anderson. But the surrounding areas (Ukrainian Village and Wicker Park) have different schools in them, and bus lines make them easy to access. East Village also has no Catholic schools, but as with the public schools, education can be found in neighboring areas.
Dining
East village is speckled with fabulous dining opportunities, with several restaurants for just about every taste. Leona’s Restaurant serves heaping piles of the best Italian food, while Andy’s Deli serves absolutely delightful sandwiches. Mon Lung Restaurant, on Ashland St. is there for those with a taste for Chinese and Tecalitlan Restaurant offers some of the best burritos in Chicago.
Night Life
East Village has a place for every style when it comes to night life and entertainment. The Sigara Hookah Cafe & Lounge offers dozens of flavored tobaccos to their patrons, along with belly dancers on the weekends…but make reservations, because the place fills up fast on Saturday nights. Innjoy on Division Street, aside from their club dj and house music, offers curtained booths for romantic atmospheres. The Empty Bottle has live music and dancing and gets great reviews from everyone. Comedy Open Mic offers patrons a good show, and DOESN’T have a cover charge.
Fun Facts
East Village was once called East Ukrainian Village. To this day, there is no formally accepted boundary to East Village—some people consider the area between Chicago Street and Grand to be part of River West, others think of it as East Village.
